Press Release

NCCPIM&TIP, UNODC, IOM, ILO, UNICEF, UNHCR, and Save the Children partner to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

31 July 2024

30th July 2024 – Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt

World Day against Trafficking in Persons is marked globally on the 30th of July as a reminder of the significance of raising awareness of this serious crime. This year's global campaign for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons urges accelerated action to end child trafficking under the theme of “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.”

Child trafficking involves the use of children for exploitation in various ways. It is a severe violation of human rights. It has devastating consequences for the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of children. Survivors often experience lifelong health issues, severe trauma-related disorders, anxiety, depression, and difficulties in social integration.

Children represent a significant proportion of trafficking victims worldwide, with girls being disproportionately victimized. 1 in 3 victims of human trafficking globally is a child.

With this theme in mind, an awareness-raising community event in Cairo was organized by the National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and Save the Children International (SCI) with the support of the European Union (EU), the United States Department of State, and the Swiss Development Cooperation. The event was attended by Egyptian children, migrants, and refugees accompanied by their parents, in addition to representatives from national and international entities, and the media.

The event aimed at raising awareness of the dangers and forms of trafficking in persons and the importance of the community and family and included a series of activities for children and their parents, awareness-raising videos, games, and the distribution of stories/comics and coloring books.

NCCPIM&TIP is the inter-ministerial committee affiliated with the Prime Minister with the mandate to coordinate nationally and internationally the policies and programmes to combat trafficking in persons. In representation of the Egyptian authorities and entities addressing trafficking in persons in different capacities, NCCPIM&TIP affirmed the collective responsibility to end trafficking in children and to preserve their rights to a safe childhood and future. The National Committee called to unite all resources nationally and internationally to dismantle trafficking networks and to support vulnerable communities at high risk of this crime.

The Committee further noted that as today marks the 10th World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, it is crucial to highlight the national efforts and collaboration between all concerned national and international partners and to accelerate action to end human trafficking. The three National Councils [NCCM-NCHR-NCW], members of NCCPIMTIP, participated in the event to raise awareness about the services they provide including their three hotlines that receive any complaints of human trafficking cases.

From their side, UNODC, IOM, ILO, UNICEF, UNHCR, and Save the Children stressed the need for the protection of children from trafficking in persons noting the vital role international organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society, private sector, play in raising awareness, providing support services, and advocating for relevant reforms.
